Smoke Damage Removal

Before any other cleaning, remove the excessive soot from walls and other surfaces using enough powerful vacuum cleaner of canister style. The gloves, goggles and a facial mask should be used for protection. Do not apply tools such as brushes and beater bars to carpeting or drapes as the soiling can be further pushed into the materials instead of cleaning them. Just vacuum the soot holding the nozzle above these places.

It is necessary to clean the carpeting professionally both before and after you remove the smoke damage from fixtures and walls. First time you clean to avoid the soot grounding into the carpet fibers when you will be removing the rest of the damage.

The next step is to clean the porous surfaces with dry chemical sponge. Beginning at the top of the surface remove the soot stains with the sponge gradually working down. Dry sponge cleaning can be skipped if damage on walls is severe enough to make repainting necessary.

Choose either a TSP-type cleaner containing trisodium phosphate or a multi-purpose cleaning concentrate with an odor remover. Dissolve one tablespoon of the trisodium phosphate powder in a gallon of warm water, or apply a concentrated cleanser following the manufacturer's directions.

Having filled up another bucket with warm water for rinsing the sponge in, start to clean the surfaces with the cleanser from top to bottom, periodically rinsing the sponge out in the clean water and sinking it into the cleaning solution as you go over windows and walls. Dump out the water from time to time and refill the bucket with clear.

Surfaces being cleaned should not be excessively saturated with water. Repeat scrubbing over surfaces until the soot residue will be totally removed. When going to move over to another section, dry off the cleaned areas with terrycloth towel. Then you may apply a disinfecting cleanser with orange oil or trisodium phosphate with a simple vinegar dissolved in warm water to remove odor even better.

Any washing materials or clothing should be cleaned by soaking them in a deodorizing solution such as vinegar and water or a professional solution recommended for use in smoke damage removal. Soak the clothing overnight after washing machine with three cups of vinegar in the water. To remove the smoke odor completely, your clothing and other fabrics may need to be washed up to five times.

By opening windows and using large fans or a professional ozone generator you should air out all the rooms to finally remove the smoke odors. Air purifiers equipped with activated charcoal filter systems are also good in this case

Fire Damage Rebuilds

If your house has recently suffered from a fire, then you are left with fire damaged wood that will need replacing.

The first thing you want to do to help rebuild a fire damaged house is strip out any damaged wood. This means any wood that is charred and unable to provide the support it was originally placed for. If you are unsure if a beam or piece of wood needs replacing you can test it out by giving it a hit or two, this of course is only to be done on weaker beams never on a main support beam. The best way to tell if a piece of wood needs replaced is the fact that it is charred black and will often crumble in parts when you grab on to it.

With all of the wood stripped out you can map out where you will need replacements to go. It is very helpful if you have the original contractor who built the house to come out take a look at the original blue prints then rebuild the damaged area. If the damage is only a few pieces of a room then you can probably buy and replace the wood yourself as long as you have the right tools. It is important to note that removing and walking around in a fire damaged area is dangerous and should only be done with the proper safety equipment and with the proper precautions.

With the area you are rebuilding cleaned out of all burned and unsupportable wood and with new wood in place you can go about repairing the next burned area. The rebuilding process is just like the original build, once you have the underlying support wood in place you can move onto replacing drywall and paint. With drywall it is best to have it tested by a professional to see if any mold or other damage has occurred, and if it will need replaced. you don't want to risk using burned out drywall because mold could grow in and flourish which causes all sorts of health problems to the person living in the room.

With the wood and drywall fit for livable conditions you can go over the area with a fresh set of paint. This is a great opportunity to give your house a new look if you are interested in doing so.

So overall fire damage rebuilds can be a long process, but once you have the wood replaced and everything going as planned you can resume living in your rebuilt housing area.

MOLD

Mold in your home or business can damage the structural integrity of your property and cause some mild to serious health problems to at risk people (children, elderly, diabetics, people on antibiotics, people going through chemotherapy, immunocompromised people, …).

Mold can be caused by a large variety of conditions in your home besides having a water damage incident. It can be caused by an improperly balanced HVAC system, a humidistat malfunctioning, a compromised vapor barrier, cracks in an exterior wall allowing moisture to migrate inside, and the list goes on and on. If one of these problems occur, mold can become a problem rather quickly. At the first sign of mold or musty odors, it is better to act quickly than to ignore it.

We are Certified in Mold Remediation by the IICRC and the IAQA. We can help you if you have any kind of mold problem, from small little isolated areas of mold, to whole houses that are contaminated. We can also help you to discover why you are having a mold problem, if the problem isn't evident.

Whatever your mold problem, we can help.

Ceiling Water Damage

Water damage is never a pleasant prospect, but drywall damage repair is less onerous than repairs to some other materials. Ceiling water damage repair for drywall is rather more complicated than repairs to walls, and presents some extra issues.

First of all is the possibility that enough water may have accumulated behind the ceiling drywall that it presents a danger of collapse. While most modern houses have 5/8" fire-stop drywall on the ceilings, this can be a blessing or a curse. It is a blessing in that the extra dimension of the material will withstand greater water weight before collapsing catastrophically. On the other hand, if one isn't able to safely drain out that water before collapse, not only will there be a greater weight and volume of water accumulated, but the extra heavy drywall material itself can present an increased risk of injury to people and things beneath.

Once the source of the ceiling water damage is accounted for, if there is a downward bulge in the ceiling drywall, you will know that there is some amount of accumulated water suspended there. After removing all furnishings and other moveables from the affected area, lay down plastic sheeting to catch the inevitable falling of water and soaked drywall. Obtain a supply of buckets and ideally, a wet/dry vacuum and prepare to catch as much of the water as possible. Pierce the drywall at its lowest point and catch the outflow with the vacuum or in buckets. Once you start, the water will flow until it's gone, so don't skimp on the buckets.

Once the immediate danger of collapse is removed, you can proceed with drywall repairs as in repairing wall water damage. However, note that working overhead presents problems not associated with repairing walls.

Drywall is heavy, and the thicker, fire-stop types are the heaviest of all. If you have to replace any area of substantial size, plan to have one or more helpers to hold the patch in place while it's secured with screws or nails.

Also, take account of the fact that you'll be working overhead, and some means of reaching the work area will be required. Doing this sort of work can be accomplished on a ladder. However, be aware that working on a ladder on a patch that you can't reach all of will require trip after trip up and down the ladder. Drywall repairs demand a number of steps, all of which must be done in their own time. A good idea is to buy or rent scaffolding to maximize the amount of area you can work on each trip up and down. It's safer in the long run, and your knees will thank you when it's over.

Fire Safety Essentials

A lot of homes and buildings have been consumed by fire and the lives that were taken away could never be brought back. This is probably the most tragic part of every story where fire becomes the main antagonist. This is also why we should all do whatever we can to prevent it from happening. It's a good thing even the manufacturing industry has been more conscious about creating fire-resistant products, and consumers are always happy about this development. But as an everyday goal, there is only one goal of all fire safety tips and that is to prevent fire.

Fortunately, it doesn't take a genius to know and understand what things to do and what not to do in order to stop a fire from occurring. Let's begin at home. Making sure there isn't any faulty electrical wiring around the house can be a big factor in keeping us safe from fires. Replacing damaged wires is a very small yet effective fire-safety precaution we can all take. Appliances should also be checked every now and then to ensure they are in good condition.

Sometimes, no matter how careful we are, the inevitable will happen. This is why, aside from taking steps to prevent fire, our homes should also be equipped with tools or gadgets that make us able to handle fire emergencies. A fire extinguisher is a must, and so are fire alarms. These are needed, especially when there are kids around the house who may not be aware of the dangers of fire. With these alarms and extinguishers, adults can be alerted to the fire while it's small and manageable.

In an office or workplace, fire safety gadgets are also a must, but the more important element of fire safety in this environment is educating people about how to act in an emergency. There has to be a plan as to how evacuation should go. This is very important, especially for a large building where a large number of people will be affected by the fire. Educating everyone about how to act during a fire is definitely very important as well. For example, a door whose knob that feels warm or hot should never be opened. After all, the best exit in a fire is through a window.

At home or in the office, however, the same common sense fire safety measures should be employed in order to keep everyone safe. First off, prevent fire by being conscious about the things that can cause fire. Second, be ready in case the inevitable happens. Third, be educated about how to handle yourself when there is fire.

A fire rated access door is graded according to its capacity to resist fire up to a certain period. Installing fire rated access doors is another good way to help draw up your fire-prevention plan, whether at home or in the workplace.

Water Damage Restoration Is Not An Amateur's Job

It was Sunday evening, and we were returning from a vacation. It had been a nice - and very exciting - journey for us. We stayed at a wonderful vacation home and were finally returning back. Tired, with lack of vigor and strength, we were earnestly waiting for the moment when we reached home. The drive had been long and tiring and we counted the miles until we got home. Who could have guessed that we would need a water damage restoration service that very night.

However, back home the scene was terrifying, and my wife was almost getting unconscious as she gazed through the lawn into the house. The entire house both outside and the inside was filled with water, owing to the heavy showers of rain and thunderstorm that had followed during the last three days. Our house had been almost totally water damaged, and I could hardly do anything except call for the aid of water damage restoration contractor through their help line. I also knew I'd need mold damage restoration before long, so I was glad that the company did both services.

Somehow we managed to spend the night in reasonable comfort. It was relieving for my family to see the group of concerned personnel heading towards our house with the full set of equipment. The entire floor was not only covered with water, but also with mud, dirt, and potentially hostile micro organisms too. Both the plumbing and roofing were leaking too, as you could see cracks in them. Water was dripping through many parts of the window panes and sidewalls. Restoring the entire house was going to be a really tedious job.

However the boys did well by separating out the mud, dirt and other solid materials. There was a temporary sealing of the cracks, and thereafter water was soaked by long blankets. All rooms were washed again and again and the vapors were vacuumed. Special germ killing sprays were applied to all our rooms. Openings of the window panes were securely tightened and locked. Much waste material was recovered from the garage, whilst the lawn was properly cleared.

Water damage restoration is a highly sensitive issue and needs to be properly looked through. Especially in the month of a monsoon, one has to be very careful. Damage restoration contractors help a great deal in bringing things back to the normal stage, since there is less probability of you being able to restore and make things good again by yourself. Obviously you have to spend some money for all this because hiring these contractors is vital for repairing damage and repairs. Be wary that often this type of damage isn't covered by home insurance policies.
